In Chapter 7 of my book Ask, you can read a letter that I wrote to my mom when I was getting ready to leave AIG and start my own business.
The letter explains a lot of what I was thinking at the time, and sets the stage for the Ask formula…
And one theme comes through loud and clear.
See, growing up we’re told to “follow our passion”…
“Do something that you love…”
“Make a difference…”
Raise your hand if you’ve ever heard one of these.
But here’s the thing:
Not everyone is going to be doing a job that they’re passionate about.
And not everyone is going to be passionate about the thing that’s most profitable for them.
In fact, I’ve had some people come to me and say,
“Ryan, I read Ask, and I really enjoyed it.”
Here’s how I want to change it to fit with my X, Y, Z business.”
And that’s the first mistake.
Look, you have a proven formula, that’s working in 23 different markets and counting.
Why reinvent the wheel?
There’s a LOT to be said for copying success…especially if you’re just starting out.
And this is true for ANY craft.
Before you become an artist, you have to learn how to do still lifes, portraits, and landscapes.
And if you want to be a poet, you’re probably going to have to learn how to write haikus and sonnets first.
The pattern is clear:
Before you innovate, you’ve gotta master the basics.
Lay the foundation.
Start with what WORKS.
The key word here is…
Start by taking action.
Build your first funnel based on the formula…
In a niche that you know will work.
And then once you start making money…
You have more capital and more free time to start shifting towards the things you’re passionate about.
The best analogy I can think of would be this:
What’s the fastest way to cheer yourself up?
It’s actually by smiling.
And the fastest way to build confidence?
Is to walk and talk as confidently as you can.
The most effective way to create change?
Is by taking action first…
And then, as a result, your mental state shifts.
Tomorrow, I’ll be talking about how some of the most successful entrepreneurs used this concept to build their multi-billion dollar empires.
And how I use it every day in my own business.
P.S. No matter where you are in your business, you can find mentors and role models in the Next Level Group Mastermind.
We’ve got people who are just starting out, and looking to model their business on what’s already working…
And we’ve got the innovators and experts who are following their passions and killing it.
And there’s something to learn from everyone.
