Nothing at Disney is left to chance.
Everything they do is based on either science, research, customer feedback, or a combination of all three.
Which is why you will find a trash can within 27 paces of any single point…
Why every building on Main Street gets progressively smaller as you walk along, providing the illusion of distance when you’re at the far end…
(This happens throughout the park, too. Everything from the trees to Cinderella’s castle uses something called “forced perspective” to make everything look bigger than it is.)
And why every detail is deliberately planned to create the elaborate illusion that you’re really in another world.
In fact, the journey from the parking lot on the tram, through an endless sea of cars, and then the ferry boat to the Magic Kingdom…
Is designed to give you the feeling that you are slowly being disconnected from reality…
And if it takes you an hour to get back to your car, well, if you forget something, then you’ll just have to buy it in the park, won’t you?
Now, there are plenty of takeaways from the way Disney runs their theme parks.
(In fact, there are college courses taught on the subject.)
But here are the ones that are the most relevant to what we do:
- Details matter. Very often the small stuff will make the difference between a one-off sale and a customer for life. You want to draw people into your world and keep them there.
- Accentuate Your Assets. Just Disney uses forced perspective to make the castle and the park seem bigger, you should be putting your best testimonials and social proof front and center. Make sure that your prospects are constantly surrounded by the benefits that are most meaningful to them.
- Test, tweak, and test some more. HOW did Disney decide where to place the trash cans? Research and testing.Getting a Version 1.0 up and running is great, but the real work happens when you optimize. Stay focused on the changes that will have the most impact (think about the 80/20 rule).
- Most importantly, the BIG lesson here is about copying success. Consider yourself lucky.
Think about it. You have decades of research on consumer behavior…
A century of direct response copy to swipe from…
And TONS of information out there on any topic you can imagine.
In fact, the only thing BETTER than having all of this information at your fingertips…
